In cooperation with the Estonian Health Insurance Fund, pharmacies are reminding patients to participate in national screening programmes. A digital tool has been integrated into pharmacy systems, notifying the pharmacist when a person purchasing medicine or other pharmacy products belongs to a current screening target group.
Pharmacists encourage individuals whose year of birth matches the screening cohort to take advantage of the opportunity and participate. Screening programmes are intended primarily for people who are healthy and do not have symptoms. The purpose of screening is to prevent cancer or detect it early — enabling timely treatment, saving lives, and helping maintain quality of life.
If it becomes clear during the visit that the patient has not yet taken part in the screening programme, the pharmacist provides information material prepared by the Health Insurance Fund and encourages participation — because cancer detected early is treatable.
